A very quick report of John Lohr and my second trip to the Canadian Arctic in July and August 2004. This time we finished flying the Northwest Passage from Cambridge Bay around Point Barrow to Nome. After being stopped by the weather from going to Provideniya Russia, we came back via Mt. McKinley, the Alaskan coastline to Prince Rupert and finally through the Canadian Rockies to Montana.

(We also raced Pond Yachts on Sunday and I almost let his car drive into the pond - but that's a different story. )

Oshkosh 2004

Churchill

Last year we missed the polar bears. This time the trip to the dump paid off.

Ice covering Queen Maud Gulf east of Cambridge Bay. Two West to East sailboats were stuck in Cambridge Bay waiting.

Weather stopped us in Kugluktuk. When we got to the hotel it was locked up. The RCMP helped us find the Westwoods. Mary (2nd from L) has been the postmistress for 18 yrs.

A camp on the Arctic Ocean

Pt. Barrow

Weather stopped us in Nome. We had the paperwork to fly the newly established VFR route to Provideniya Russia.

Contrary to rumor, these are not the Nome pilots who tried to make the trip in spite of the weather.

Mt. McKinley

For John it was a homecoming as he had made two trips to Talkeetna to climb the highest peak in North America. On the second attempt he summitted.

Bush pilot legend, Don Sheldon's restored Super Cub. It was his book, WAGER WITH THE WIND, that got me wanting to go to the arctic.

This summer's fire season was about average. Often viability was down to 3 miles west of Fairbanks.

Glacier National Park

Mt. Robson near Banff and Lake Louise

After getting to Montana the trip was less exciting. We went back to Madison to drop John and I continued back to Annapolis.
